Web serving on the Mac

Apache is an incredibly flexible and powerful web server, but it can take a while to climb the learning curve. This forum is where you should (hopefully) be able to find answers to even the trickiest Apache configuration questions. While discussions about WebStar and MacHTTP are also to be expected, many people may not be aware of the benefits provided by web application servers such as WebObjects, Tomcat, and Zope. Which platforms are you working with, and why did you choose them?

Re: Web serving on the Mac

I just received a new XServe which contains Apple's Apache 1 with all the "Server Settings" - type programs and modules to make configuration easier. I've enabled mySQL and PHP4 and everything is ready to go.

But then I saw all the new Apache 2 stuff at http://www.serverlogistics.com/ and am wondering if I should install all these new packages in place of what just shipped with the XServe. I also have WebObjects 5 deployed and have a development version on a separate system. I am not a UNIX geek, so I'll probably use a lot of bought packages and freebies that are available on the web. Would I be asking for trouble installing the new stuff?
