OK,
I've given-up on phpMyAdmin.
Tried all those funky commands for changing the OLD_PASSWORD and it'd just not happening for me.

MySQL runs
PHP is there
Did the "Apache Tweaks", which got me into the OSC New install screen, but not past it.

How do I set up a DB for OSCommerce using Navicat so that I can continue using the install instructions in the tutorials here?

I set up a new user called "Control User".

When I attempt am install, here's what i get:

     New Installation

    Database Import

    A test connection made to the database was NOT successful.

    The error message returned is:

    Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading      MySQL client

    Please click on the Back button below to review your database server settings.

    If you require help with your database server settings, please consult your hosting     company.
